Comments:In NEED of GOOD laptop support. PLEASE bring back some official support for laptops. Yes I was able to get Solaris-8 installed on a t20, and yes with the XFree86 driver support managed a working display -- but it took days to get to a "workable" setup. The end result doesnt have modem support, and my wireless card isnt supported (or any wireless card, for that matter), and (IMO) its not quite ready for prime-time. Dealing with DHCP when the server doesnt give out a hostname is one prime example that doesnt quite work as smoothly as it could/should.
I'd really like to dualboot btwn windows and solaris -- but cant get there yet. I'd really like to ditch windows and use some emulation within solaris so that i can run MSOffice -- but I know thats just a pipe dream. But it would surely make my day if I could completely ditch windows and still have the ability to run the 'corporate required (Windows) apps' that I need for my job.
btw: I've been running Solaris/x86 since the 2.4 days ... including a 6 year run on solaris-2.5.1/x86 for my main home machine (which is now getting upgraded to solaris-8/x86).
Wake up guys. Windows is awful. But is used by millions b/c of the apps. Linux supports a ton of hardware, and is "starting" to get the apps, but falls short in stability. Solaris is absolutely rock-solid -- but doesnt support enough hardware, and of course has the app problem as well.

Comments:This is just a quick note, I really think that it is great that Solaris is now available for the x86.
I do however wonder about the optimization. I still believe the best platform is Sparc.
But, running on x86 shouldn't be too demanding. This is a server OS and should be treated
as such. There is no need for high end 3D gaming boards. Tried and true hardware for rock
solid stability and proven track record is what its all about. Don't believe the hype - and
those blue guys pushing over rated P-4's on the market. The weakness of x86 is the guess work that
goes into it.
