Solaris X86 Acrobat Reader Page

Powered by Solaris x86 Have you ever tried to get Acrobat for Solaris and got frustrated only to realize that there is not a current version available for Solarisx86 but there is for Solaris SPARC.

Now is your chance to add your RANT about it.

As of March 2, 1999 you can now get a copy of version 4.0 of Adobe Acrobat reader for Solaris x86 at: http://download.adobe.com/pub/adobe/acrobatreader/unix/4.x/sunx86-ar-405.tar.gz
However they never released a version 5 for Solaris x86.
Well this was an opportunity to vent and show your real willingess to support an effort. In other words put your money where your mouth is...and maybe we will all win. If you so choose, enter other methods of support like porting or testing. Keep in mind these are part of the product and they just might take you seriously. Then again maybe not.

Make an Adobe Product Feature Request yourself first hand!
See what the Forums at adobe have to say about it and send your comments Adobe support Forum You will have to register with adobe to do this
Run the other alternative, xpdf-2.00, a precompiled version is on the companion CD and available at: http://wwws.sun.com/software/solaris/freeware/

XPDF is also available in source form at http://www.foolabs.com/xpdf/download.html

I would really appreciate having Acrobat Reader available for Solaris x86 as it is the operating system that I use the most for my work. I have been wanting this for a couple of years and it is now getting to the point where I am asking my clients to send me files in OpenOffice format, as anyone running almost any OS including Solaris x86 can download and install a copy of OpenOffice that will run on their OS of choice and open OpenOffice files without any trouble. PDFs are not portable if they cannot be open on any OS and architecture.

I really need to be able to access technical documentation on out database servers which all use Solaris on x86 architecture. I am very surprised to find out that Adobe despite of its declared openness to all platforms neglects existence of this platform. He4y come on guys lets get a current version of Acrobat reader out there for Solaris X86. Times change and so do trends. I can see why you dropped the X86 support as Sun tried to drop the product. But again times change and now X86 is back with more force than ever before. Read the trade rags Solaris 10 X86 is out there kicking butt and if you guys can not recompile your Sparc version for X86 then people will look to other products. I have been using your products for years, paying my money and supporting your company. Please support mine.

Adobe, During the release of Adobe 4.0, You orginally had a release of Solaris x86. You stopped that but kept the Sparc version. Please continue to release Adobe and all your products for Solaris. Keep in mind that the Solaris we are referring to is for Solaris x86 release not the Sparc version. It's ok to have that as well and should never be a difficult port between the 2 platforms. Many companies continue to use PDF as their mainline documentations standards such as mine does (Accenture). I've been using Solaris and many of the xpdf doesn't quite support many of the features that Adobe does. It works but it is only half done. Adobe is the only company that can release a version will work. Please release Solaris x86 versions of your products.

Adobe, As the rest before me has stated it would be more than nice for Adobe to compile a version of all your products that you currently support the Sparc version of Solaris and port it to Solaris x86. This really should be a no brainer to compile for Solaris x86 as the the sparc version isn't that much different. I would like to see current version of the Adobe Reader to be ported over. It is so widely used in the industry. Just having one more to port over shouldn't be that big of deal for such a large firm like you. If you don't want to just allow the Solaris x86 communities to compile and port the code ourselves. Phillip

Dear shareholders of the Adobe, your Acrobat-Reader product line is well known and valued in offices all around the world. This makes Adobe the market.leader in portable documents. To keep this position, there's always the need to cover, in best case, all existing platforms and operating systems available on the market. Unfortunally, it seems to me (and most of the Solaris-x86 will agree, I think...) that the current adobe management isn't willing to keep that place seriously. Or why does adobe force us to use clones and open-source software instead of the proven original ? Please help us to keep the company where it should be and make them to build a solaris-x86 version of (at least) acrobat 5. Regards Hubbel

And given Sun's increasing support and investment in Solaris/x86, you as a company can ride the wave with the rest of us Solaris users. I see Acrobat Reader for Solaris/x86 as a win-win situation for both Adobe Inc. and Solaris/x86 users. Why is Adobe not making Acrobat Reader for Solaris and Solaris x86?! The Solaris version is up to 5.0 but the x86 version does not even exist anymore! Linux is even behind. Does Adobe not recognize that other operating systems besides Windows exist?!? Considering that all systems have the capablity of browsing the web and Adobe has worked so hard to be the document display king, why are they refusing to supply the binaries for the other OSes that exist? If they are unwilling to supply the product for other OSes, why don't they supply the sources and let us build our own? Give us options, not headaches.

I run Solaris x86 from Sun Microsystems on many servers and workstations. It is most difficult not having a current version of Acrobat Reader for Solaris x86. Why would you offer a version for Solaris Sparc, but not for Solaris x86? It would seem logical to find more engineers using commodity x86 hardware for workstation needs, than those using high priced Solaris Sparc systems with an Acrobat reader. If I personally were going to offer only one version of the Adobe PDF reader for Solaris, I would do so on Solaris x86, which will obviously have more engineering workstation users. Most users do not need the full feature sets of Acrobat 6.0. If Adobe were to offer a simple reader like 5.x, it would fill most all needs for viewing PDF documents and files.

Acrobat is a great product for professionals and amateurs alike...and Sun's Solaris 9 OS has come a long way...Developers such as Adobe should keep its support of the Solaris x86 environment in order to maintain comaptibilty as well usability for all those users that are using this great OS... I hope Adobe doesnt dissapoint its users by not covering compatibilty for an OS that is truely one of the best so far.

I thought Adobe Acrobat was about document portability across platforms? It can't possibly take that long to compile (acrobat version 5 at least!) binaries for Solaris on intel. Guess Sun must be telling them to drop support for the Solaris x86 folks.

To Whom It May COncern: I was trying to learn UNIX and as it happens I had an Intel machine arround and started the installation. It was kind of weired to find out that I cannot read ANY documentation sice most of it is in pdf format. Why should I have to buy a new piece of hardware (ie. a SPARK), when the intelligent soulution is to just download a pice of software? It is interesting enough how there is a version for Linux and not one for Unix which are 2 virtually identical OSes. I hope I will soon be able to download an Adobe Reader for Solaris on X86. Sincerely, Nadina Lungu

I'm doing quite a lot of typesetting, mostly mathematical texts. Before MathML becomes a widely supported standard, PDF is the only format to make typographically complicated papers viewable on the web.

Take a look at www.ams.org website or other mathematical on-line journal and check what is the most common format for the papers and reviews. Yes, it is PDF. So how can I and my colegues read it without a viewer on our Solaris x86 desktops? Switch to M$? Is Adobe a M$ subsidiary?

Many folks are utilizing Solaris x86 in a mobile (laptop) environment; not just servers. This group of people rely on Adobe Acrobat to read PDFs created by the Adobe products. Many people do use it and rely on it for file viewing. Sun Microsystems is working with ISV to increase the number of applications for the Solaris x86 platform. The removal of you Acrobat Reader product cripples the productivity of those who depend on your product. Please reconsider a release of the Acrobat Reader that can be available to the Solaris x86 community. If a small fee for maintaining the product is an issue, please consider that as well.

I hope Adobe will sort out the things about their port of acroread on Solaris x86 and provide the software. Sun should support this and get more software support for Solaris x86 and SPARC. Hope to see soon acroread ltest versions for x86 and SPARC. Regards, Stefan

I would think this to be a trivial recompile. However so should the compile for most other products Adobe offers for Solaris.
Please do not banish us from your Portable Document Format.

Acrobat is required for solaris x86. Adobe imposes the crappy encryption support for pdf's and doesn't post specs, but won't support all the platforms, and also thus not allowing other pdf viewers to have the capability. How do you think you feel that people who are developers can't finish their development because of the ignorance at adobe to do a recompile of a view where solaris x86 is already a supported os again by Sun. So hear the chant: "Acrobat for Solaris x86"
