Support for Solaris/Intel! Please! Our shop has approximately 200 Solaris/Intel users that make use of Mozilla browsers. They are currently unable to view Flash pages due to the lack of an available Flash plugin. Recompiling the Linux plugin for Solaris/Intel should be an almost trivial affair-- some people have already gotten it working (on older Mozillas) using a Linux emulation package. Please consider devoting some small amount of time to it!

Solaris is available on x86 platforms too!!!

</RANT>

There are workarounds for issues like this - i.e. browser plugins only being available for certain o/s 's.

I am aware of similarities in the areas of the ELF environments between Linux & Solaris. I have offered to compile source code for plugins, for Solaris x86 & have received no reply.

Firstly - I really would like a reply, even if only a corporate brush-off.
Secondly - Is it really, really, necessary to keep any legal proceedings completely secret [ please see first point!]

I know that eventually someone's patience will crack and a freeware plugin will appear - this is in part due to the huge success that Macromedia's plugin technology is enjoying.

Bravo! Good technology really brings a smile to my face - but please look at the bigger picture - if it's free for other O/S's then the users of alternative O/S's are going to want that too.

Best Regards

Alex...

With all respect, recognition of the need for a Solaris x86 version of Shockwave is long overdue. Indeed, it's more likely to have more widespread use on the x86 platform than on the Sparc as the latter used for strictly server purposes. Given the portability between the Sparc and x86 implementations of Solaris, there's not THAT much work involved. So let's get to it, shall we? Thanks in advance.

Hi, Folks. I am one of the literally millions of Solaris X86 users who want ShockWave for Solaris 8 X86, and of course can't find it, because you have never released such a product. If you are not aware of the current number of Solaris X86 users, why not contact Sun and verify it? But I know that there are over 1 million verified users of Solaris X86 on the various Intel processors. Please don't ignore this market any longer. We are constantly reminded that we don't have ShockWave when we visit a site that uses it, and netscape tells us it can't find the correct plug-in. It's very frustrating. If you have no resources available to build a release from the existing Sparc code, I would be glad to sign a non-disclosure, and build it for you. I have a couple of Solaris X86 systems here running Solaris 8 X86, and I have the Sun C and C++ compilers for the Intel platforms. It's a trivial task to recompile the Sparc code for the X86 platform, and could probably be done in just a few hours at the most, unless you have endian issues that have to be resolved. If you do have resource for this, but just don't have a machine setup for the environment, let me know and I will arrange for a loaner machine to be delivered to you, along with the compilers and whatever other tools you might need. Come on, Folks. Sun has publicly stated that they will be supporting Solaris X86 into the foreseeable future. This platform is not going to go away, and has become very popular since Sun allowed free access to the OS. I believe that in just the last year, over 1 million additional users have joined the existing Solaris X86 market. Please address this issue now. Regards, -Carl Erhorn, Mountainview Software

First of all, if linux has a plugin, then, there is a bias in the business. There are plenty of SolarisX86 users who utilize this powerful and efficient operating system for their personal as well as their professional needs. This should be a business justification for writing a Flash plugin for SolarisX86. Well, if you want one, I will give you one. I am member of a lot of websites that utilize flash: 1.egreetings.com 2.RR.com 3.LAUNCH.com As well as my clients and professional business prospects that use flash, which I cannot view, because my Solaris operating system (Intel), has been discriminated, unfairly. I will write to these websites explaining that they are losing plenty of clientele, who would be more than happy to support their business, but since there is fixed idea that no one will notice this partiality, will cost more than you think.

- Well, my reason is simple. If I my system does not talk to me, I get very sad. And you guys at Micromedia are not helping me/us at all. What would it take for you to release an Sx86 port? I mean, you've been offered help from all kind of resources to make this a dream come true. Are you dreamless, are you not sleeping due to the pressure of not knowing how to compile an Sx86 port? It is no longer an option!
Critical information is being distributed in various forms including Flash. The world has suddenly become an unsafe place and things we need to know are buried behind Flash presentations.

This is going to lead to class action law suits forcing vendors to provide software for all platforms or require authors to use only ubiquitous methods to distribute critical information.

Which ever, it's time to take this to court.

I figured it out. Sun wants to go out of business. Macromedia wants to support only crappy animation. OK, so I will tell every company I consult to use only Linux. I have to teach Solaris on Linux machines because their traing uses Flash presentations. I refuse to teach M.S. NT based products because I feel a stable free OS is better than an unreliable exspensive OS. Yeaah I could make more money, but I don't have to feel like a thief. Shockwave for X86 Solaris, hmm yea that would be a nice addition. Well, yea that would actually be a really good idea, seeing that something like a million folks have taken the time to download and install the OS, not to mention those that use the OS on a corprate level. This , well its a just another example of a large company being foolish. I mean hell if I were like, really really stupid, I would shoot myself in the foot with a 12 Guage Shotgun too!

Sorry... been busy. I too am tired of x86 being treated like Sun's stepchild. It's a strong, reliable, smooth alternative to the other flavors of *nix, and it makes my management overhead SO small to run both sparc and x86, instead of having to resort to another flavor for the x86 boxes. Why can't the software developers see this and take the, IMHO, small amount of time to recompile their plugins/apps/etc. for Solaris x86?!!!

Please consider the Solaris on X86 platform a much needed plugin. Since you already compile for Sparc, there is no reason not to compile for X86. If you don't have a system, ask SUN for a loaner. If they will not help, I will send you mine, or arrange for a loaner for you. Don't ignore the posts, there is no room to wiggle here. We'll loan you a system with a Forte compiler installed, or arrange for one from SUN. It's rediculous not to support this platform. Give me (or anyone here) just one good reason not to. I really doubt that you could, so stop putting it off, and just do it. Want help? We'll get it for you. No excuses now, so please just do it! --Carl

With nearly a million copies of x86 Solaris 8 downloaded in the recent past, plus all the copies obtained on CD, Solaris on Intel is not a trivial percentage of the total Solaris universe. A significant portion of the Sparc systems are servers that never are used with browsers. Yet Shockwave is available for Sparc Solaris and not for Intel Solaris where it would be of greatest benefit, for individuals browsing the net on their own systems running Solaris. It makes not sense to me!
